CUAAH Membership

Membership Criteria
There are 5 types of membership within the Center for Urban and African American Health (CUAAH):

  • Scientific Member
  • Associate Scientific Member
  • Training Member
  • Clinical Member
  • Community Member

Major Criterion for Membership
The major criterion is an active interest in health disparities research. This is demonstrated evidenced by active participation in research, teaching, clinical investigation, clinical care, and community outreach activities.

Membership Application | Apply
An individual may request membership by submitting a curriculum vitae, a letter of support from a current member of the CUAAH, and a completed application (attached). The application will be reviewed at the next meeting of the CUAAH Internal Steering Committee for review. Notification will be sent to the applicant from the Chair of the CUAAH ISC regarding the decision.

Categories of Membership

  • Scientific Membership in the CUAAH is a category developed for individuals who are a) a WSU faculty member with externally funded research that is consistent with the CUAAH mission; or b) an investigator who is an active scientific collaborator on an externally funded CUAAH study.
  • Associate Scientific Membership in the CUAAH is a category developed for WSU faculty who are not currently externally funded but whose research interests are consistent with the CUAAH mission.
  • Training Membership in the CUAAH is a category developed for post-docs, along with students in training and graduate positions.
  • Clinical Membership in the CUAAH is a category developed for individuals whose primary professional activity is patient care and who collaborate on CUAAH research projects.
  • Community Membership in the CUAAH is a category developed for individuals from the metropolitan Detroit community whose leadership in developing community support for the CUAAH has made a major impact upon the field of health disparities research and/or the future of the CUAAH.

Membership Privileges
Scientific Member: Top priority for Core services. Eligible to apply for pilot study funds. Attendance at Institute CUAAH, retreats, and seminars. Newsletters, email list serve recipient.

Associate Scientific Member: Access to Core services. Eligible to apply for pilot study funds. Attendance at Institute CUAAH, retreats, and seminars. Newsletters, email list serve recipient.

Training Member: Eligible to apply for pilot study funds. Attendance at Institute CUAAH, retreats, and seminars. Newsletters, email list serve recipient.

Clinical Member, Community Member: Attendance at Institute CUAAH, retreats, and seminars. Newsletters, email list serve recipient.

Membership Renewal Criteria
Membership will be reviewed on an annual basis and considered for renewal based on the following criteria:

Scientific Members: Maintenance of active, health disparities-related, peer-reviewed funding. Academic appointment in good standing. Regular and documented attendance at CUAAH meetings, seminars and retreats.

Associate Scientific Members, Training Members, Clinical Members: Academic appointment in good standing. Regular and documented attendance at CUAAH meetings, seminars and retreats.

Community Members: Documented contributions toward furthering the CUAAH mission.
